Preservation: What you need to know about Conservation Framing?
Conservation Framing is the use of materials such as glass, mat board and binding materials that have been proven to preserve and maintain art in as close to its original condition from harmful elements that can ruin your artwork, photograph or memorabilia. We take the care to treat and handle your artwork with Conservation (Museum Quality) materials and methods so your pieces will last a lifetime. Please refer to the following links for more information about Conservation Framing techniques.
What Constitutes Conservation Framing?
- The use of acid-free and lignin-free mat boards, made from either 100% cotton fibers or chemically purified wood pulp, will prevent the acids from standard mat boards from transferring to the paper artwork they come in contact with.
- In conservation framing, the artwork is always separated from the glass so that the art never comes in direct contact with it.
- When the artwork is mounted, conservation framing demands that only hinges be used, rather then mounting it permanently with heat, glue or any other mounting method.
- Conservation matting consists of the backboard to which the artwork is hinged and the mat board into which the window opening is cut.
- In selecting this premium system of framing, you’re choosing the best materials and techniques you can get to preserve the beauty and value of your framed piece.
When should I ask for Conservation Framing?
Your Framer should advise you when conservation framing is necessary. If the item you are framing represents an investment and has resale value or is a treasure that you want to pass down to future generations, it should most certainly be conservation framed. Conservation framing is an important form of insurance for your valuable artwork, keeping it as lovely as it is today for enjoyment for years to come. Keep in mind; if a piece has value of a more personal nature, it can deserve conservation framing. As a rule of thumb, if the item you are framing is an irreplaceable, one of a kind photograph, document or piece of memorabilia, or if it’s an original work of art or limited edition it should be framed using conservation techniques and materials. The cost premium for conservation framing is marginal and certainly well worth it.
Conservation and Museum Glass:
Conservation and Museum Glass is specially formulated to protect framed art work from the damaging effects of ultra-violet light, which is one of the most dangerous elements that your artwork can encounter. It will not only cause your colors to fade to a mere shadow of their former glory, but will cause the materials themselves to begin to break down right in the frame. By specifying conservation and museum glass, you are insuring that over 97% of these most damaging light rays are filtered out before they ever come into contact with our treasure.
Conservation Matting and Backing Materials:
Conservation Mat Board and Backing Board are free of all acids, lignins and other impurities found in ordinary “pulp” board. Ordinary pulp-based mat board contains acids and lignins, which, over a period of time, damage the artwork they come into contact with. With conservation mat board no damage will be caused to your artwork as time goes by.
Mounting or “Hinging”
It is important that you stress that proper conservation techniques for mounting the artwork and sealing your artwork be upheld. Only conservation tape and corners should be used to secure your prized possession. Some framers use masking tape that will cause damage to your artwork. Craftsmanship, attention to detail and quality represent how Art Leaders Gallery will handle your artwork.
