Henry Asencio

Henry Asencio, born 1972, was raised in Santa Maria, California.  Excelling in art throughout his childhood, Asencio set a goal to become a world class artist at the young age of 11. In 1998, Asencio was the first American artist to receive both the gold and silver medals in self-portrait and figurative studies at the Amsterdam Art Competition. After graduating from the prestigious San Francisco Academy of Art, Asencio began his professional artistic career in 2000 with limited edition mixed media works.

Drawing inspiration from prolific artists such as Lucien Freud, Wilhem de Kooning and Gustav Klimt, Asencio's works are be deemed as "Abstract Expressionism."  Asencio states, "drawing is the essential backbone of every great painting," in that every painting begins with a drawing and a study. The unorthodox techniques of using both ends of a paintbrush, forks, knives, and rakes assist in creating his unique and painterly style. His loose and edgy brushstrokes enhance the timeless medium of oil on panel.

Asencio concentrates on creating a mood and a feeling rather than simply recreating a scene. "I want people to feel what I am doing - not just what I am painting." Many of his paintings capture the essence of serenity and solitude. The combination of the serene beauty of the female figure and the harsh masculine brushstrokes create a piece of work that enraptures the viewer and evoking their emotions.
