PENUMBRA

Penumbra – Fittingly, the name means partial shadow. And, just as her face remains partly hidden in half shadow, so this work chooses to reveal only part of its mystery and meaning until you view it from all its many angles.

In this deeply spiritual work, Frederick Hart explores the relationship between humanity’s outer beauty and our underlying, inner spirituality. From the front, we behold the outer beauty of a radiant Madonna-like vision whose face is enfolded by cloudlike drapery gently softening the fall of light upon her features.

However, Hart challenges us to look beyond her external brilliance, and reveal the spiritual mysteries shrouded beneath her protective shawl. Slowly, as we turn the piece, we begin to see the world through her own eyes, a world of inner peace suffused with a purity that brings us closer to the mystery of her very soul.
