Alexander Volkov

Original and Limited-Edition Photo-Realistic Landscapes

Alexander Volkov was born in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad), Russia in 1960. His journey with art began during his high school years when he started painting with oil. He brings drama into his photorealistic artwork with a unique vision. Merging mood and atmosphere, his art brings forth strong emotions that create harmony. It is, however, the light in each of them paired with the fine detail that makes each one of these photorealistic paintings true masterpieces.

Learn More About Alexander Volkov

In 1986, Volkov graduated from the Department of Physics at Leningrad State University, demonstrating his diverse interests and talents. Following graduation, he ventured into the world of animation, working as an animator at Leningrad Studio of Science Films. Later, he explored stage artistry in a small Leningrad theatre, honing his creative skills in various mediums.

Artistic Journey in Russia

  • In 1981, Volkov embarked on his artistic journey by exhibiting his paintings with a group of 200 Leningrad artists known as the “Brotherhood of Experimental Arts.”
  • This collective represented the underground art movement in Leningrad during that period.
  • Subsequently, Volkov joined a splinter group called “Ostrov” or “Island,” comprising 30 artists who felt their work transcended the confines of socialist realism and extreme avant-garde.
  • These experiences laid the foundation for his artistic expression and worldview.

Venturing to the United States

In 1990, Volkov made a significant move to the United States, where he continued to pursue his passion for art. Settling in various cities, including Princeton, Lambertville, and New Hope, New Jersey, as well as Carmel, Laguna Beach, and San Francisco, California, he exhibited his paintings and shared his unique artistic vision with diverse audiences. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new environment, Volkov’s commitment to his craft remained unwavering.

Philosphy & Artistic Vision

Reluctantly labeling himself a “self-taught” artist, Volkov emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and self-discovery in the artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from an array of influences he emphasizes the profound impact of his experiences on his artistic voice.

Volkov’s art reflects a lifelong fascination with architecture, landscape, and still life subjects, infused with drama and poetic expression. As Volkov describes it, his art explores the mystery of light and dark, unraveling stories of illumination amidst shadows.
