Pop art is a movement of the late 1950s and ’60s that was inspired by commercial and pop culture. Short for “popular art,” it features common household objects and consumer products. Coca-Cola and Campbell’s Soup cans are the subjects of many pop artworks. Also, it includes forms of media—such as comics, newspapers, and magazines—known to the public. As a result, artists often create works using commercial techniques. These artists used bold, simple, everyday imagery, and vibrant block colors. Because of this, pop Art was one of the first art movements to narrow the divide between commercial and fine arts. In turn, this movement opened the door for postmodern art. Today, many pop artists create works of art that include portraits of famous people. For example, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn are often the subject for many artists due to their sway in pop culture.
