Faust Magicians: Faust Reading

Salvador Dali – Pierre Argillet Collection

Original Etching on Japon

Framed Size: 18 1/4″ x 22 1/2″

Edition: 1/100

Information on Faust Reading and the Pierre Argillet Collection

Faust Reading is part of the Magicians portfolio of the Faust suite. This portrait is similar to the etchings of Rembrandt. That is to say, it shares a similar rendering of light and dark, creating a an almost magical atmosphere.

Dali’s Faust suite of 21 etchings are his Surrealistic interpretation of the fateful story based on a real-life astrologer and alchemist in 15th century Germany. Furthermore, Goethe’s Faust is one of the most well-known stories in history. To illustrate, Doctor Faust sold his soul for power and knowledge. Hence, the tale of Faust is a cautionary one. To clarify, it warns of the dangers of pride, greed, the devil on earth, witchcraft, and many other interpretations of evil.

The Argillet Collection of Salvador Dali Drawings and Original Etchings is a collaboration between Surrealist Salvador Dali and art collector and publisher Pierre Argillet. Accordingly, this collection demonstrates the highest standards of quality, draftsmanship, and artisanship. As a result, this body of work is possibly the finest work produced by Dali during his career. Between 1934 and 1974, the two men created and published nearly 200 works. Ultimately, many of which have been displayed in some of the best known museums around the world.
