Roger Sawn captures the beauty of the everyday occurrences. From sunsets to water scenes, his landscapes are filled with color and life. Primarily working with the contemporary landscapes and skyline as his main subject matter, Swan allows the paint to develop its subject matter, rather than working from or recreating a specific scene. By working conceptually, he allows the work to develop a freedom from the boundaries normally associated with the traditional landscape paintings. The conceptual process also allows the notions of color and shape to be manipulated into a piece that leaves the viewer with questions as well as answers. He believes his use of brushstrokes, texture, and color creates a composition of magnetic dynamics, as well as beauty of freedom and tranquility.
Roger Swan was born in 1960 in Seoul, Korea. He became an accomplished abstract artist and is recognized for having a unique style. Self-taught, he began experimenting with various painting techniques in the late 1980’s. As he explored the possibilities of painting, Swan became absorbed in the texture created by different applications of paint to his canvas. As his captivation with texture progressed, the content and form of his paintings became simpler. Color studies replaced traditional forms of content in his pieces, and the balance and contrast of color became the second focal point of his paintings.
“From early in my teenage years a quote has never left my mind…. ‘Life’s too short. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you may miss it.’ I’m looking all the time. I get annoyed when I see a spectacular sky and all the people around me are doing there day to day routines, missing what is happening above their heads. This life is too short so I’m trying to remember as much of it as I can. Landscapes and skies are constantly changing, giving a constant flow of inspiration which I enjoy exploring. I love being able to capture a moment in time. Many sketches are taken of the countryside, which I record in a book as well as digital images. I store these alongside my sketches. When back in the studio I can use these images to transport myself back to my thoughts and plan out my painting.”
His abstract paintings and contemporary landscapes have captured many fans since his exhibitions in United States including the International Art Expo in New York. His work can be seen at fine art galleries and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. His original oil painting paintings can be found in select galleries thought Europe and the United States.
