Learn More About Sun Joo Kim

Sun Joo Kim was born in 1954 to a family living in South Korea. His life was filled with art from a young age, immersed in the rich culture of South Korea. At 26 years old, he participated in the Korean Ministry of Culture sponsored national art exhibition held at the prestigious National Hyundai Art Gallery in Seoul.  After that first exhibition, Kim began entering his art throughout the country, thus creating a name for himself. The Central Art Caravan furthered his career, and three years after he began exhibiting his art, Kim’s art had gained momentum.

Experimenting with styles as artist do throughout their career, Kim began focusing on hyper-realism. Being dissatisfied with his style, feeling as if something was missing, the artist left for Spain in 1991 as an effort to find inspiration. There he enrolled at Facultad de Bellas Artes de Madrid, and graduated five years later, majoring in oil painting and intaglio printmaking.

Expressionism became the style he pursued in Spain, however he still felt empty. Experimentation, combining his original hyper-realistic style with his newly found expressionism, Kim found the niche he so desperately searched for.

Sun Joo Kim currently resides and works in Madrid, Spain with his wife and daughter. His work can be found in galleries and collections worldwide.
