Surrealistic Bullfight: Burning Giraffe by Salvador Dali
The Pierre Argillet Collection
Drawing inspiration from Picasso’s Tauromachie, Salvador Dalí crafted a series of seven original etchings titled The Surrealistic Bullfight. Each piece captures a dark, unsettling tableau, often featuring an anguished animal surrounded by ghostly, macabre figures. Burning Giraffe shows a flaming giraffe and a mournful, clown-like matador stare directly at the viewer, heightening the surreal tension. Dalí’s portrayal of the bullfight seems to critique the tradition, presenting it as both barbaric and grotesque. While revisiting a Catalan theme previously explored by Picasso, Dalí infuses it with his distinctive style, transforming it into a nightmarish, delirious satire.
